On this episode of the Food About Town podcast, Jacob Rakovan, Rachel McKibbens and Luc Thiers from The Spirit Room came over to the studio to talk about their grand opening on October 1 and explained how they’ll be integrating poetry, cocktails and local history into the renovated space.
Also if you haven’t voted yet, please go to the City Newspaper website to vote Food About Town for best podcast. It was a thrill to win last year and I would love to be back on the ballot again this year.
Thanks!
This episode is brought to you by Phrank.ly. Phrankly is working to make sourcing and distribution for restaurants, farms and specialty goods more transparent and change the way people find their food.
Rachel and Jacob have been hosting a very popular poetry reading called Poetry & Pie at their house for years and it will be continuing at The Spirit Room which is a great development for their fans. Personally, I just learned about this and I’m excited to check it out and see performances from all different parts of the Rochester community.

The Spirit Room will be serving southern themed food with recipes that have been kept very close to the traditional versions from their place of origin. I mean take a look at that hot chicken! It looks fantastic and I can’t wait to try it and see how much my face melts off. It seems like the team will be keeping tradition in their minds whether it is the food, drink, performances and environment. The location on State Street seems to have energized them and I’m excited to see what they become.
Go to the soft opening drag show event this Saturday on 9/16 and definitely check them out on their grand opening on October 1. The demographic should be nothing like Rochester has now so check it out and see if it fits into what you’re looking for. Keep track of what’s going on there on Facebook.
